Students are experiencing a significant loss in their regular routine and ability to socialize with others. It is expected that there may be a change in their demeanor and behaviour. Not all youth respond to stress in the same way.
Some changes to watch for in youth include:
- Difficulty emotionally regulating (ex. Irritability and “acting out” behaviors)
- Returning to behaviors they have outgrown (ex. Fingernail biting or skin picking)
- Excessive worry or sadness
- Unhealthy eating or sleeping habits
- Use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
- Increase in personal isolation for an extended period of time
- Language that is hopeless or helpless (ex. Talking excessively about death, suicidal ideation)
- Stay informed - not overloaded.
- Reassure your teen that they are safe. Let them know it is ok if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope from you.
- Try to keep up with regular routines. With schools closed, create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities.
- Be a role model. Take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat well. Connect with your friends and family members virtually.
